FATHER OF THE GROOM - July 8, 2006 - Our Wedding in Evergreen Colorado

JOURNALING: Could I please have your attention?
It is well known that the least significant member of the wedding party is the father of the groom. It does, however, give me the opportunity to stand on a soap box and say a few words.
It was five or six years ago that I asked Matt if he ever planned on getting married. He said "No sir. I like life the way it is." Then Angela appeared on the scene and Matt's commitment to bachelorhood went by the wayside.
Angela, Matt's mother and I did our best to raise him to be a fine young man. Fortunately, his mother's input was far greater and more profound than mine. In fact, Matt claims that all his bad habits he acquired from me. I find this to be untrue. He picked up most of those on his own. You may want to round off some of his rough spots, but I warn you, if you haven't found out by now, he is rather stubborn. That is one attribute that I readily accept that he acquired from me. Not only that, his grandfather was considered one of the most stubborn individuals of all time.
Last summer, Matt's sister, Annie, met Angela for the first time. She told me later that if Matt could convince Angela to marry him, he should be awarded THE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD.
This morning, Eric and Mike, two of Matt's brothers in law, and I met with Matt. We came up with at least 20 different ideas on how to manage things after the marriage. We did tell him that none of them worked for us, but perhaps he may have better success.
Matt, I challenge you to be the husband that Angela will adore, cherish, respect and love the rest of her life.
Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to propose a toast. "Matt and Angela, I have the endorsement of all your friends and relatives when I say I wish you a long and happy life together. God bless you both."
